The cast of "The Princess Bride" is reuniting to raise money for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin -- inconceivable to Texas Senator and Princess Bride superfan Ted Cruz.

I know I've said before that I haven't been able to watch The Princess Bride in many years, due to one day suddenly realizing out of nowhere that the script, to put it lightly, isn't exactly a feminist masterpiece, but I may suck it up and make an exception for this. I get to irritate the likes of Ted Cruz and do good? Well, all righty then!

I’m all in favor of more and more conservatives realizing that the artists behind their favorite creative works fucking hate them

Irritating Ted Cruz is a reason to love doing it!

Ted? It's all about the thing in the White House. We're willing to do whatever it takes to get rid of that thing in the White House. Why you aren't...makes us wonder.

It helps, if you view The Princess Bride as a film of its time (also written by William Goldman who is also a product of his time). Also Princess Buttercup is a bit more spunky than one might think. But overall, I agree it's not exactly a feminist masterpiece - but the men are kind of stupid too, so that also helps.

If you've already seen it? No reason to re-watch. It doesn't hold up well in my opinion. I've read the book - which I kind of like better. I tried a re-watch a while back and my attention drifted away from it.

I loved it when I saw it in theaters way back in the 1990s? (I think it was the 1990s).
Now, I find it to be a bit stale.

My cousins love it though, along with a lot of folks online.

it seems to be one of those things people think if you don't like it, there is something wrong with you. i do not. i watched it once and did not get the appeal.

except for the vid my brother showed me of castle of cagliostro lupin III with the prince bride trailer audio over it.

Yeah, I've noticed that. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is another movie - that people tend to shame you for not liking. Along with Home Alone. And Titantic.

Oh, I do love Castle Caliostro Lupin III.

Princess Bride? I'm ambivalent about. It's okay. But I know a lot of people who are huge fans. One got me to read the book - which I enjoyed more in some respects.

I love the book, and I hate the movie. The book doesn't have much feminist cred, either, but you do get some what more of Buttercup's inner life, and I think that helps. But, in the end, the thing really missing from the movie is the sense of irredeemable loss; It also does not interrogate lies and stories, and why we need them and how they can damage us. Which is really what the book was about. I've heard it referred to as the quintessential Viet Nam War book, and I think that's not wrong. Weird, but not wrong. The movie is...extremely salable.

In the 1990s, I'd gotten hold of a book by the screenwriter/novelist of The Princess Bride - where he discusses the process of adapting books to screen, and the filming of the Princess Bride. William Goldman who wrote the Princess Bride and adapted the screenplay - is also the screenwriter behind some big films of the 1960s and 70s, such at Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Marathon Man, and various others I can't remember off the top of my head.

A lot of the stuff he had in the book he had to cut for the screenplay, and also he had to focus more on the Princess Bride portion of the story.

I can't remember the book that well - although I do agree it was better than the movie.
The only reason I remember the movie better (outside of having a visual memory) is that it is quoted endlessly on social media. One of my cousin's named her son after the title character, the other one named her dog after Buttercup. (yeah, I know. I probably should add that both cousins loved the Twighlight series and the films. Also they are feminist - just don't seek it out in entertainment choices. Or require a strong female heroine.)

The movie is a parody of romantic fantasy - which either works for people or doesn't.

Yeah, I've been more than a little uncomfortable with some of Dread Pirate Roberts' lines. I can sometimes attribute them to him role-playing before he reveals who he is, but still....

I was wondering why Princess Bride turned up in a Rolling Stone headline, I'll have to open up that email and read about it. Anything that yanks Ted Cruz's chain is good news as far as I'm concerned.

Sticking out to Ted Cruz and any other Republican is a noble cause. Even if you know full well that the material didn't agree well.

I may have mentioned, when I need to elevator pitch She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (yes, I know the creator is cancelled, but I need them in my life), I tell people, "The Princess Bride, but lesbians." (And extended. And barely passes the reverse Bechdel. But that is too wordy.) Sorry, been a long night, but thought I'd mention even though it barely glances off the topic...

Honestly, right-wing assholes finding out their heroes want nothing to do with them makes me cackle.

I watched PB as an adult and found it charming if a little dated. Just could not get into the book, though.
