Sep. 10th, 2020 06:36 pmThe cast of "The Princess Bride" is reuniting to raise money for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin -- inconceivable to Texas Senator and Princess Bride superfan Ted Cruz.
I know I've said before that I haven't been able to watch The Princess Bride in many years, due to one day suddenly realizing out of nowhere that the script, to put it lightly, isn't exactly a feminist masterpiece, but I may suck it up and make an exception for this. I get to irritate the likes of Ted Cruz and do good? Well, all righty then!

It helps, if you view The Princess Bride as a film of its time (also written by William Goldman who is also a product of his time). Also Princess Buttercup is a bit more spunky than one might think. But overall, I agree it's not exactly a feminist masterpiece - but the men are kind of stupid too, so that also helps.

Date: 2020-09-07 01:01 am (UTC)I loved it when I saw it in theaters way back in the 1990s? (I think it was the 1990s).
Now, I find it to be a bit stale.
My cousins love it though, along with a lot of folks online.

Date: 2020-09-07 12:59 pm (UTC)Oh, I do love Castle Caliostro Lupin III.
Princess Bride? I'm ambivalent about. It's okay. But I know a lot of people who are huge fans. One got me to read the book - which I enjoyed more in some respects.

Date: 2020-09-07 12:53 pm (UTC)A lot of the stuff he had in the book he had to cut for the screenplay, and also he had to focus more on the Princess Bride portion of the story.
I can't remember the book that well - although I do agree it was better than the movie.
The only reason I remember the movie better (outside of having a visual memory) is that it is quoted endlessly on social media. One of my cousin's named her son after the title character, the other one named her dog after Buttercup. (yeah, I know. I probably should add that both cousins loved the Twighlight series and the films. Also they are feminist - just don't seek it out in entertainment choices. Or require a strong female heroine.)
The movie is a parody of romantic fantasy - which either works for people or doesn't.

Date: 2020-09-07 04:22 pm (UTC)I was wondering why Princess Bride turned up in a Rolling Stone headline, I'll have to open up that email and read about it. Anything that yanks Ted Cruz's chain is good news as far as I'm concerned.

Date: 2020-09-09 10:47 am (UTC)I watched PB as an adult and found it charming if a little dated. Just could not get into the book, though.
