Wearing construction masks that have breathing vents, wearing the mask over the mouth but not the nose.

I know that this is not really effective, not like wearing the mask the right way - but is it ineffective as in "why bother?" or ineffective as in "it's only protecting 10% (50%, 30%, whatever) as much as it would be if you did it right"?

Probably still more effective than the ones who "wear" a mask by having it dangle down, hooked over one ear only, or hooked over both ears, but pulled down so it's covering only their chin. They definitely fall into the "why bother?" category.

Some vented types are "This protects me from you, but not you from me." The N95 woodworking mask i have falls into that category.

Wife has proposed making a mask Bingo Card. Free spot in center would also be labeled "No Mask". Other spots include:
Cowboy (bandana)
Dangling from one ear
Beard bra (covidiot who has a mask, but it's pulled down covering just their beard)
Mask with political statement/logo
Nose exposed
Face shield
Animal face on mask
Properly worn mask
WWI Gas Mask
and so on.

Well, part of the effect of a face mask is to reduce the velocity of coughs and sneezes. A mask over the mouth but not the nose will help with coughs but not sneezes. At least, I would think -- sooper scientific research preferred over my uninformed opinion.

I think someone else wearing a vented construction mask is better for me than if they have no mask at all, because if they don't catch the virus, they can't then spread it to me, or to anyone they live with (on the assumption that they're not wearing the mask at home).

But that's reasoning from first principles, not from actual data.

I don't know the vented masks first hand. I would say they might be akin to face shields, so as redbird a less likely vector.

I'm using (very intermittently but whenever I leave the property) a particulate mask because I found one among items. I do now know how to better wear it so I don't fog.

Pretty sure a WWI gas mask would have serious rubber rot, unless there is a Time Lord or some other timespace anomaly so probably not protecting the wearer. Bystanders would socially distance, barring that one researcher.

I'm surprised someone hasn't put the mudflap silhouette on masks yet. Right now I'd prefer even that to 6' potential vectors raining down on me. (Britain, can you get some page three royalties arranged. Maybe we can get men masked if they have boobies.)

My sister works in a pharmacy, and she said that she'd prefer if some people did not wear masks if the alternative is "wear a mask, pull it down to talk to people, then touch everything with your germy hands". In her opinion, more than half the people she sees wearing masks (they're not mandatory here) would probably be less contagious if they didn't wear one...

I think you got the science links in the top comment, so you're -- pardon the pun -- covered. I'll just add that protectiveness for you yourself varies on one axis; protectiveness for others varies on the other axis. The ones with the breathing-out hole are good on the YOU axis but zero on the OTHERS axis, for example

Not sure how germ the outside would be if it's catching your own droplets.

Considering the way people drive cars, none of this surprises me.

The mask gets wet (and traps germs) when you breathe into it, and when people touch it to temporarily remove it, they transfer all those germs to their hands and then into everything else they touch. You're supposed to wash/disinfect your hands every time you touch your mask for any reason, but a lot of people fail to do it.
