Definitely a cool map, or set of maps.A couple of those are reminders of why I try to avoid that intersection, and at least one "now which was is up?" even though I used to go through there moderately often (Astor Place/Cooper Square/Lafayette).

Garlic knots outside of NYC are out of a bag you get in the freezer section, which may be the actual difference. Secondarily, they are definitely a newer product in comparison with Texas Toast or straight-up garlic bread. (Alas, I never got to have them before the gluten became an issue.)

Like, we don't have them *a lot* around here (Boston area), but I've encountered them occasionally.

We've definitely got them in Philly.

I had to look up "garlic knot" to find out what it was, and I've never encountered it in California. We have garlic bread, but it's not made quite the same way.

Wegmans has them fresh in the bakery. Not one of their bigger sellers, but they're definitely there.

Of those of us who've heard of them, one connects them with NYC, one connects them with Italian-American stuff.

I've definitely had them and know what they are, but I've never seen them very often. Might have been on a trip.

I don't feel like I can answer the poll as framed, because - well, I know I haven't met them in the places I've lived, but I don't know about non-NYC places I *haven't* lived. And also, I tend not to get a lot of bakery goods because nut cross-contamination is too common, so it would be conceivable that they exist even in places where I have lived.

But I had to look up what they were. Before I did, I was envisioning a variant on a garlic braid, not garlic bread.

They sound delicious. If I ever visit NYC I'll have to see if I can try them.

Also, those intersections look like a flock of wonky asterisks.

They're definitely a thing in Philadelphia, although there is a fair amount of overlap between NYC culture and Philly culture, so that's maybe not surprising.

I can't recall having seen them since I've lived in Florida, but it's also next to impossible to find a decent pizza place in Florida, and also my digestive system hates garlic so I automatically skip over anything with "garlic" in the name when looking at a menu.

You mean "no" as in "no, it is indeed not the same thing, because they're distinguished from each other in this way"?

They're very definitely a "Only in the US" thing, because they just don't happen here.

I've never heard of garlic knots, but after looking them up I have to say they are relevant to my interests.
