As far as I can tell no Diana Wynne Jones has been suggested. I'm not on Reddit, but if I were I'd be tempted to name /Fire and Hemlock/.

Picking a favorite book is like picking a favorite child. You can't bear to wound the others.

My first thought was "Code Name Verity," by Elizabeth Wein. If that has already been suggested (or if you suspect you're talking to a fan of vampire stories), try "Fledgling," by Octavia Butler.

Zoe's Tale, by John Scalzi, or Impulse, by Steven Gould. Yes, I guess I like snarky female/teen protagonists. On the other hand, both Swordheart and Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher are amazing, and feature mature female protagonists...

I'd pick Wynne Jones' Charmed Life, I think. I adored that one...

Fire and Hemlock goes for me as one of the three great fantasy novels published since The Lord of the Rings. It's an awesome book.

Nina Kiriki Hoffman's Spirits That Walk in Shadow

Used to be that I had hundreds of favourites. This is now the one that I recommend above all others. Content warnings for emotion vampire and problematic parents. (possibly also abusive family members - there definitely are in others of this series, but the stories are all tangled in my head). Technically book 3 of the series, stands alone just fine.

The idea that child abuse mostly occurs in poor families is ridiculous.
