Interesting. I never came across that meaning of "triptyque" in French. I was only aware of the meanings the English word has listed in MW, and the closest I can find in a quick perusal of online French dictionaries is "a document comprising 3 pages, often carbon copies" in the French wiktionary, which meaning isn't quite that specialized. I wonder what the exact derivation is.

Interesting fact I did not know before, if you spell it like a French word, triptyque, it means a type of passport for a car

!!! AAA had (and apparently still has) a service for members where you tell them where you want to drive, and they'll prepare a custom navigational booklet for you (this is what we had before Google Maps) they called a "TripTic", which I always heard (and maybe, back in the 90s when last I did this, actually saw printed as) as "triptych", because medievalist. I remember being faintly put out, in a "but it doesn't fold in three? why is it being called a 'triptych'??" way, but if it's a pun or other allusion to "triptyque" that makes so much more sense.
