They say that what you do on New Year's Day sets the stage for the rest of the year

I'll tell you what I'm not doing today. I'm not moving any damn furniture, that's what. Last year my family laughed at my resolution to NOT MOVE ANY FURNITURE, and I doubt I'll get more traction this year, but why press my luck? Not going to do so much as push a chair in.

Oh man I wish I could back you up on this but I'm literally* packing boxes to move house on the weekend.

*My husband is packing boxes. I have been banned from helping because it makes me so miserable that it's "more fun if you don't help". I am permitted to clean the empty space after.

Which I take to mean that my brain will continue skipping a track here and there as it has always done. No resolutions in that corner.

My grandmother had the superstition that no laundry could be washed on New Year's Day because to do so would cause one to have to wash laundry for sickness in the coming year.

I am holding with her belief and taking the day off from laundry today. :-D

I thought it was "washing your wealth away", likewise with sweeping (especially if you sweep out the door instead of into a dustpan).
