Cute anecdote
Oct. 4th, 2019 09:45 pmDear Diary:
I was in the West Village on a beautiful spring day, walking my 13-pound rescue mutt Charly and enjoying the first days of warm sun.
Coming down the block was a tall, muscular young man dressed in black leather. With him was an equally muscular big dog of unknown breed, also decked out in black leather, including a large leather collar with spikes, and on a chain link leash.
Because Charly is overly friendly with other dogs, I thought I should probably cross the street. Why risk a confrontation?
Then, just as we were about to cross the street, the man and his dog ducked into a garage.
“Phew,” I thought, as Charly and I continued down the block.
Passing the garage, I looked in and saw the young man. The dog was cowering behind him.
The young man looked at me sheepishly.
”He’s afraid of other dogs,” he said.
I just want to hug both dogs now. (If they want hugs, I mean.)

Date: 2019-10-03 03:21 pm (UTC)At the time, our then-poodle, Celeste, she was a bit of a bully, but only to dogs of equal or lesser size. One night Russet took Celeste to the observatory, and the other dog was there. Celeste became a total coward. The dog showed no hostility, but she was SO BIG.
Now I have to tell you a little of the layout of the main building of the observatory. You go in the front entrance, and there's a tiny little sort of mud room, then on the left a living room, on the right a kitchen, continuing right a lab, forward a hallway connecting to the 2.5 meter control room, further down the hall a 4-way intersection. The left goes to the 3.5 meter telescope (my wife's baby), continuing forward there's a room to the left which it the 3.5 meter control room, and the right connector connects to the labs off the kitchen.
On a later trip to the observatory with me and Celeste, the guy was there with the dog. We walked in with Celeste off the leash: she would follow us without the leash. We enter, and as soon as we entered the living room/kitchen area, she froze. She knew the dog was in the 2.5 control room. She immediately turned right, went through the lab - in the dark - to get to the 3.5 control room in order to not be seen passing the 2.5 doorway to avoid the dog!
What a wimp. :-)
