The man's always been an asshole, I guess. I hate 9/11 to begin with, and with any luck this will be the last related article. I don't want to think too much about politics or the rise of the far right all around the world or why it is that the worst are filled with such passionate intensity or anything else.

It's a pity, really: I briefly gained some respect for Giuliani when, on 9/12/01, he told the people of New York City "Don't take this out on your fellow New Yorkers. This was not done by New Yorkers." And it worked: New York City didn't have any substantial anti-Moslem violence in the aftermath of the attacks.

Of course, Giuliani squandered that moment of respect a few days later by suggesting we postpone the impending mayoral election and keep him in office until the mess was cleaned up.

A nasty little video- aimed at exacerbating social division. It should be possible to honour the flag without demonising one's fellow citizens.

Giuliani has had a fascinating career. When New York was attacked he took on the leadership role that George W Bush flunked. He has often showed exemplary courage. His actions as the current president's attorney haven't enhanced his reputation.

I will say, as somebody who has always loathed Giuliani and all he stands for, and has thought since he was in office that his term as mayor was nearly an unmitigated disaster, the he really stepped up on 9/11. That was his niche, and boy did he fill it!

And then it's been downhill ever since. Water does seek its own level.
