Them: I am a bastion of good manners and common decency! Tell me one instance where I have been anything but unfailingly polite!
Me: Uh, how about reason 1, reason 2, reason 3?
Them: No, I disagree. I do those things but have no intent to change. People are just mean to me for no reason!
Me: They'd probably respond better if you didn't do 1, 2, or 3. Those things are really bad manners.
Them: I disagree. After all, I am a bastion of good manners and common decency!
Moderator: Except for the fact that you keep doing 1, 2, and 3. You should really shape up.
Them: You cannot point to a single example of me doing anything wrong!
Me: Well, there's always 1, 2, and 3....

Edit: "I disagree."

I'm sure you do, but like the man who insists on his absolute moral right to chew with his mouth open and clip his toenails at the dinner table, it doesn't matter much what you think. He doesn't get invited to very many dinner parties. You get progressively banned from every place you go. The whole world treats you like an asshole, and no matter how much you try to blame the world for this fact, the truth is that you are the cause of this.

Heh. I was just having an irritating conversation with someone in which I had mentioned that doing a certain thing is rude, and my interlocutor got all suddenly relativist and "well I'm surprized you'd make such an absolutist statements and different cultures and blah blah blah" and I'm thinking, "Welp, try doing it yourself and find out how many parties you continue to get invited to."

What an excellent way to not have any friends again ever!

I mean, I've said a whole bunch of stupid things in my time. But I (hopefully) have always been willing to listen, and at least consider that I might be in the wrong.

Mrr. The people who refuse to acknowledge any reality outside their own are the most difficult to deal with.

I'm very curious as to what 1,2 and 3 are.

Honestly, I think this person was looking for sniveling agreement, not someone who actually pointed out that they were in fact Being A Dick.

Sorry you had to deal with them! (Although I've found that in cases like this it's almost always a he...)

But that would dilute his contributions. The community exists to reinforce how Right he is, right? Ugh.

Yeah. "CAUSE===> *smack!*===> EFFECT" - that's the inexorable Law of Karma. If you don't like the effect, stop initiating the cause.

Note that this inexorable Law also applies to getting pissed off at assholes for being assholes. You might just as well spend the precious hours of your irreplaceable life getting pissed off at frogs for being frogs. If the frogs never get invited on luxury cruises because they're frogs, that is no concern of yours, or (probably) of anybody else's either -even the frogs.

Hoi polloi gonna hoi polloi, dearheart. Just let them. You certainly can't stop them.

They brought it on themselves.

I'm not anti-frog; I just acknowledge that their intrinsic frogginess unsuits them for luxury cruises. I'm sure they have no more desire to be invited on them than my cat has to go wind-surfing, or my daughter's boa has to go skiing, or your little dogs have to go to the casino and play the slots.

Of course, those who are not intrinsically frogs, but rather are under a froggy enchantment of some sort, may feel differently, and desperately hope to someday sail on The Love Boat. Too bad for them; as I say, they brought it on themselves and have nobody else to blame. Genuine frogs don't have these problems.
