Might the dog have tugged them under your bed?

I am definitely also suspect that a dog could be responsible for the missing shorts.

And as someone who is very fair skinned but also Latina, I sympathize with the folks in that metafilter thread and the original article to some extent. I have strongly Latin American features, but my coloring tends to wash away people's perceptions of me as nonwhite; it turns into a really weird experience, because fellow Latin@ recognize me as one of the group but anyone who is not Latin@ thinks I'm not either (unless they're looking at a black and white photo). It's not just white people making the assumption that I must be white. I have never stopped to unpack this but I HAVE noticed it.

Try the refrigerator? (Sensible suggestions have been made, so I'm filling gaps.

They don't happen to be the same color as the bedding or a piece of furniture, do they?

They’re Haunted by ‘Ghost Warrants’ Years After Their Arrests

Even worse are the cases where typos or some other error result in the warrant having someone else's info.

So the warrant which was for John Smith shows up when you enter Jack Smith's info.

The folks this happens to often have letters from the department that the original warrant is from describing the error and telling the arresting department who to call to confirm the letter.

A big source of these errors is that the national system sends out these warrants and in case of errors or other things usually sends out corrections or cancellations.

But the local departments (even state police!) often are set up so that warrants from the national system get added to their database, but the corrections and withdrawals *aren't*.

Frivolous answer: "Ubo, O ubo est sububo?" is dog-Latin for "Where, O where is my underwear?". Lingua canem sola bonum lingua est. Your dogs might know where your shorts are.

I don't say they took them; merely that they may know where they are. Where were they, anyway? Gym bag, laundry basket, dryer or dresser drawer?

See, I bet your dogs knew that, especially if you'd worn the shorts already.

That's why you ask in dog-Latin!
