never had to replace a U-bend, but had to fish my earring out of the sink one time, and it's probably a similar procedure? bucket under the U-bend, unscrew both its ends, dump into bucket, and that'd be the point at which you insert the new one

For what it's worth I've found even some of the big chains have helpful, knowledgeable staff in terms of picking the right glue for the right kind of plastic of the pipes and whatnot.

The hard part is getting the old one off. Are your pipes plastic or metal?

Okay, that means that you don't have to fuss with glue or hacksaws. You shut off the water, drain the pipes, unscrew the collars holding it on, dump the water inside it into a handy bucket, then install the new u-bend. Don't forget the teflon tape on the threads to keep everything water tight.

If it's been soldered together, you need a blowtorch to un-solder the joins, proceed as above, and then solder the new U-bend in place. Remember to protect your hands from the heat :)
