Anybody in the NYC area? Preferably with a car?

Having put it off long past the time we ought to have done this, we're going to pick up our compost next Sunday, the 19th. The more hands we have, the better, and then afterwards I'll absolutely bribe everybody with pizza and whatever.

Relatedly, if anybody has any rabbit or goat poop (or other composted manure, not picky) they'd like to send my way, let me know. Your pets poop an awful lot, don't they? What a hassle! But so useful for the garden...!

Doesn't need to be composted first, so it's easier to get your hands on. Definitely don't want cat or dog poop, because there's a higher risk of parasites or illness in the resulting stuff.

Although if somebody could assure me their dog/cat/human poop had been hot composted using a safe system, I'd be willing to consider it for things I don't intend to eat. But they can't.

I thought that cat/dog poop was too acidic to make good manure, even aside from the Carries Diseases issues!

(I would be surprised if ours had illnesses -- strictly indoor, and regular vet visits -- but I certainly wouldn't risk it anyway, even if we were nearby. Plus it's in the litterboxen with all the pee, too. O:p )

It may be, though I'm sure the correct use of amendments can adjust that if you know what you're doing.

Haven't used goat, but rabbit is great, good balance of nutrients that are high in nitrogen.

Yup, that's what I mean. The more households we have, the more we can get - up to 400lbs per home. Which sounds like a lot! But....

IF we can get a ride, I mean. Nobody's lugging compost home on the bus. The plan would basically be to meet up at the boat (you can get there without getting lost) and take our ride over to Fresh Kills which is now a park, get the loot, go home, drop it off without letting you see the sorry state of my front porch (that's on the repair list, we just haven't done it yet) and then go get pizza. Or Sri Lankan food.

You'd have to register beforehand, and we chose the last time slot. But there's no point in me giving you the link to register until I've confirmed we have a ride.

If there are any riding schools, boarding stables, or the like in your area, you might try giving them a call. Horses do produce a lot of waste, which often ends up in big ol piles somewhere. That stuff breaks down into some really great fertilizer.

Since most stables end up having to pay a company to haul the manure away, they're usually happy to let folks come and take as much as they want away for free.
