*ahem*

is that I've been buying all the new things and I really ought to be backing up some of the old things. So I'm resolving that over the next few months my spare kindle money will go to getting editions of books I already own and enjoy in dead tree format! Because I've officially run out of shelves. (Hah, I ran out of shelves years ago, and that's with stacking. I've officially run out of floor. I've also run out of mattress, piano, kitchen counter, linen closet, downstairs pantry, and basement... or, anyway, nobody else is letting me store books in those places anymore, and if they did I'd have more floorspace, but even I can see that this is not actually a viable longterm solution unless I want to end up like the Collier brothers.)

Will I then go and store my old books? PROBABLY NOT WITHOUT A FIGHT! But I'll be able to.

Hey, what's the data limit on an individual kindle anyway?

I hear you (mind you, most of my books aren't available as ebooks but some, maybe...) Thing is, I still love them so much...

I don't know about the data limit, but it's possible to archive books in your Kindle account without having them stored on your Kindle (though you can unarchive them whenever you like). I've been using that to clear up books I've read recently, since my Kindle is an app on a phone that doesn't have vast amounts of data, by my ebook-buying standards...

And this is why I have given away 1000+ books in the last year and switched to buying almost exclusively ebooks. While I definitely prefer dead tree editions, the clutter just gets away from me. I still buy DTEs occasionally, but it's very rare.

My Kindle (version 5) currently has 251 books downloaded on it, and as far as I know plenty of space. Also, as I saw people mention above, there is no limit on books you can actually have in your account and download or delete as many times as you'd like.

That they do.  And it was also a matter that there was no way that I would ever get around to re-reading so many of them: too many new authors that I'd rather read!

Well, on my Kindle Fire, it's how big a memory card it'll take. I've got a 32 gig card in there and it holds an insane amount of books and music.

You'll run into the limitations of how the kindle organizes books way before you run out of memory.

Having it just display the books as a big lump is a royal pain once you get over a dozen or so.

I really wish it could display by author. Or buy whether I've read them yet.

It'd also be nice if It'd filter on whether or not I *own* the book or not.

I just have to figure out how to get it to show me things by folder instead of the big lump.

I don't don't know about Fire--got a PaperWhite--which lets you sort by author, title, or most recently opened. Don't think it'll do Unread, but I'd have to check.

You can also side load books from your Kindle to a computer or through to a thumb drive using the free Calibre software, if you don't trust Amazon to hold your books in the cloud for you.
