After working it out from context, I typically try to connect it to words I already know.

I wonder what it says about me that my first thought when I saw the word "lenitive" was to think "lenition" and not, as they suggest, lenient.

(I don't actually wonder. That's rhetorical. I know what it says about me.)

"Alive, in triumph! and Mercutio slain!
Away to heaven, respective lenity,
And fire-eyed fury be my conduct now!"

(Yeah, I know what it says about me that that was my first thought.)

Lenity, leniency, lenitive and lenition are all related words, and all describe the softening of something ordinarily harsher, but not (necessarily) the same sort of things. In the context of linguistics, lenition is just one of six, count'em, SIX different types of consonant mutations in Sindarin.
