Choke-proof food may be necessary, but it sounds yucky.

The article about grizzlies and the Cajun Navy were both interesting.

They presented it the wrong way. When you start by describing food that is prepared to appeal to a healthy diner with no trouble chewing or swallowing foods of any texture, the choke-proof stuff seems yucky. Of course.

My uncle had throat surgery a while back. It made it terribly hard for him to swallow. He can taste just fine. He gets hungry. He gets thirsty. He just can't chew. It took weeks of PT before he could drink water through a straw. It's still a lot easier for him to swallow liquids that are thicker than water; he has packets of thickener he's supposed to mix with water so it will go through the straw slower and be easier to swallow and not choke him. He says it doesn't really taste like anything...but it's easy to get dehydrated when the alternative is drinking tasteless goo.

After a lot of hard work, he can manage some kinds of thick soup (but not chicken noodle.) He drinks Ensure, and he's working on learning to eat Jello. He's lost a lot of weight. From his perspective, this choke-proofing stuff looks GREAT.

That makes perfect sense. I have had friends who've had strokes and have difficulty swallowing afterwards. So I can see how these foods would be good for them.

I also had a friend who had jaw surgery and had to eat all liquid foods for three months while the bones healed.

But yes, the presentation to people who can chew makes it seem very yucky.
