Incidentally, we seem to have quietly gotten an answer on Steven Universe

for why they couldn't just take over an uninhabited planet: they suck the life out of the ground when they are developing, not just raw materials. This may explain their longevity. But... such a method of reproduction did not invent itself. Where did they come from?
