i grew up in a small town in texas (about 2-3 hours west of dallas) and we had a pretty significant congolese refugee population. i can't speak to how accepting they found it, obviously, but it's one of the ways texas is more diverse than people realize and i think one of the reasons it's also gradually becoming less of a red state. this page is interesting; a lot of it is probably virtue of space available, but in 2015 texas admitted 7,500 refugees, about 1,700 of them from african countries, compared to 1,700 total in massachusetts (where i currently live).

I've been wondering about the future of amputations. Ironically (or perhaps I should say appropriately), I feel like a lot of the casualties of enlisted vets has helped in terms of figuring out better amputations in recent history. I'm genuinely curious about seeing if they eventually reach a more cybernetic future; I am aware of a paralysis-treatment using a machine to bridge the gap between a severed spine, while I also read about the use of using stem cells to push for a regeneration of brain life (which I more likely see being used to restore neuronal function). There was even an article I read about how vets seem to have the choice between reconstruction or amputation, since both are getting pretty good these days. So many things to think about.

These days, the only thing that I feel bad about Teen Vogue is that they're still associated with a name that people associate with, well... teens. Then again, Buzzfeed also had a similar issue for awhile despite offering high-quality investigative pieces.

The story of Dallas feels like history repeating itself... in Iowa. It's kind of sad that that legacy had to end, actually.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised with Japan having that raccoon problem; any country that thinks it's okay to have pet owls despite being such a developed country just amazes me.

Oh, on the subject of climate change: did you hear about the proposed atmospheric CO2 extractor? Doing it on the cheap makes sense, moreso than the proposed water pump power storage they're thinking of making out of old coal mines.

They've been proposing CO2 extractors for a while. At this point, I'll believe it when I see it.

That's fair, just think that with energy prices at an all-time low and the tech getting more efficient, it's going to be inevitable that the extracted CO2 will be worth enough to be considered a viable option for people to push.

Re: TX education

Yes! It is almost impossible to get an ELL student tested for and admitted into special education. This year we went round and round for 6 months about a girl and are ending the year with nothing but the promise that they will look at her situation when she starts high school next year. Yeah, right.
