How do I make the dog stand again so we can do it again?

The best thing to to train the dog for another command - either come, go, stand; something like that, because it will reinforce the overall training. "Sit" becomes "sit until told to stop sitting" instead of just "sit for a moment then go chase the squirrel."

This worked for us:

Give your dog a release word ("free" in our case.) Once the dog sits, after a moment you give the release word and make a big excited deal about it. If the dog un-sits when you say the release word, praise him or give him a toy or a treat. Practice doing "sit" and "free" with the "sits" lasting progressively longer. If the dog gets up before you release it, take it back to the place it was supposed to sit, have it sit again, and give it the release word after a shorter amount of time. It's best to practice with the dog on a leash, so it can't just run off, and it's better to do several short practices a day (like ten minutes each) than one long practice, so the dog doesn't get bored and frustrated.

The release word can be used with other commands like "down" too. This is useful in the long run because you don't need to teach a separate "stay." The dog knows it's supposed to keep sitting or lying down until it gets the release word.
