Dogs can really streamline my after dinner clean-up. I've long since been in the habit of tossing meat scraps at any cats lucky enough to be in my vicinity as I put away dinner, but now I have furry disposals for veggie scraps as well. (Yes, I know, dogs - especially small dogs! - should only have a small amount of human food. But I don't think a few bites of plain boiled potato is going to kill them. I google everything before I let any animal near it, and anyway, if it's more than a few bites I put it away in the fridge.)

Finn, thus far, has proven himself quite enthusiastic about plain boiled potatoes, tomatoes (only in tiny quantities, which means I now have to hide my tomatoes away), green beans, and sweet potato. Moonpie is enthusiastic about... dog treats. Sometimes. Well, there's no accounting for taste!

We want to get Finn fattened up so he can have his surgery, so anything healthy that he's eager to eat, we're happy to give him.

He just needs to be altered, but because one of his testicles is inside - a condition which is poetically called "hidden orchid" - this is a bit more invasive than the usual castration, so they want him to be at the proper weight, not underweight as he is.

Tomatoes are deadly to dogs!

I did ask the vet, who said that very small servings once in a rare while are okay. Which is good, because by the time I realized Finn liked tomatoes, I'd already lost half of one of my Kumatos.

It was actually kinda adorable, but if I'd realized he'd steal my tomatoes, I would not have left them accessible! I used to have cats that loved tomatoes, but the ones I have now don't, so I'm not in the habit of remembering to put my snacking tomatoes someplace I can't just reach down and grab.

My dog is the best cooking companion. Ends of carrots, stalks from kale, potatoes all gone. He's pleased as punch and I don't have smelly garbage XD

Pity you can't put smelly dog, um, stuff in the compost, though.

They're pretty easy. Wash a jar (and lid!) with hot, soapy water. Wash the cukes and any herbs you plan to use. Cram the pickles into the jar, add your herbs and spices, pour over water and salt to cover. (You'll want to use precise measurements for the water and salt!) Don't cap too tightly, and burp two times a day until done.
