I'm dubious about some of these numbers, in that I remember checking some of the USDA's food planning guides, and they made heavy use of starchy fillers to stretch servings. I don't know that I could actually get adequate protein in my diet at (checks) $37.60 per week, unless I went over to all eggs, and/or started poaching the squirrels.
Meanwhile, I called a friend and asked her to back me up - my sister was shocked at the grocery bill, which actually comes in just under the "thrifty" allowance for the month - and she told me she spends about $100 a week. For five people. I don't know how she does it unless she eats out an awful lot and doesn't count that.
I always wonder how they come up with these numbers. I had to do £15/week for three years from 2008 onwards (about $22.50 at the time), and it wasn't as difficult as you'd have thought looking at that table. I think I had meat almost every day.
