Maybe, instead of telling each other not to get involved with trolls, we should spend our efforts asking for organizations with comments sections to make and enforce a comment policy. Maybe we should make it clear that nobody is fooled by arguments about "oh, oh, oh, free speech" and that outright bigotry and poor logic are unacceptable in civilized society.

I just don't want to be the only one.

That is absolutely how I feel. Or rather, I go further, and slightly to one side. Further, in that I agree with the argument somebody raised that if you don't moderate your comments, you're basically a slumlord, fostering a dangerous blight, and that there's a positive moral/ethical responsibility to moderate one's forums. To one side in that my idea of what needs to be moderated for is somewhat different than most people's.

I agree, actually. A significant portion of my life is in the comments section of public, but personally moderated, blogs.

Not as yet. I may consider reading over there. I'm likely to lurk, though. It may not seem it from how much I blather on here, but I am actually quite shy of *new* spaces, people, and means of communicating.

Yeah. Quora is a good place for well-moderated comments, FWIW.

YES. One of my favorite blogs is Ask A Manager, partially because some of the things people write in for are really bizarre at times, but mostly because the comments section is *usually* safe because of Alison's moderating. (Every so often it goes a bit off the rails and she does try to let every point of view talk if they're respectful. Though she outright banned politics from the open threads since the election, which I think is probably wise.)
