And I remembered in one of the Little House books they gave different words, about Old Grimes, who wore an old gray coat "that was buttoned down before".

25 odd years since I first read those books, and I finally realize - it wasn't buttoned down previously, it was buttoned down in the front. Now it all makes sense!
