Actually, I always thought that it was the rise of standardized testing that's killing cursive, because teachers need time to "teach to the test" instead of helping kids do handwriting. :-P

Classroom overcrowding, lack of instruction in how to teach penmanship for teachers, really, you can take your pick.

The trouble is, if you're not actually at a keyboard, handwriting is still the easiest way to input data for most people. Phone keyboards are perforce too small to be "the easiest way", and voice recognition still has weird errors now and again that can be hard to work out (and not everybody wants to speak aloud every time they make a shopping list). If ever the computer world really gets on board with a stylus that feels comfortable to write with on the device of your choice, schools are going to be scrambling to play catch-up.
