Oh, god, talk about a killer headache

We got home from swimming and I just basically collapsed and let the girls do what they wanted. I think they ate dinner...? Or apples or something anyway. I may have cried.

Other than *that*, it was a great day. Ana had a one-day class at the AMNH, and I got to hear all about how brilliant she was afterwards (she asked me why I like hearing that, and I was just like... uh, the alternative is to hear that you're a dolt with poor hygiene and worse manners, so I'd rather hear that you're well-behaved and generally wonderful?) and Eva and I wandered around and joined a tour and learned quite a bit.

LOL, one school group in particular kept bumping into the two of us, and I overheard a teen saying to her friend "That's NOT a beaver!"

"Yes, it is, it says right there - Mountain Beaver!"
"Oh, well, I don't read"

Clearly, neither does her friend, because right next to the words "Mountain Beaver" it states that they are not beavers. I didn't interrupt the kids to point it out to them, though.

We had mountain beavers (AKA boomers, and no, they don't boom) in our yard where we lived when my daughter was little. They're not only not beavers; they're the last of their kind, a primitive mammal not found anywhere else. They're nocturnal and very shy, so not easily seen, but they make huge Habitrails of burrows all through the damp ferny bits of the forest, which are sometimes hazards to navigation where they cave in under trails.

Well, only if you're running through their bit of forest, and don't see the hole. We had to put down planks as boomer-bridges in a couple of places.

Mountain Beavers! We had one tunneling in our backyard...he was trapped and released.
