And a whole passel of homeschoolers as well, of course.

I say "we" went, but in actual fact, the girls ran off as soon as we got there, immediately glommed onto the sole other non-joiner in the group, and made a concerted effort to stay out of earshot for the entire two hour tour. Since objective 2 ("get them some more friends") was neatly accomplished I decided to let objective 1 ("learn about edible plants") slide. In fact, due no doubt to the late season, we found very little that I and the girls couldn't already identify. Poison hemlock (we didn't collect any), a mushroom of some sort (definitely didn't collect any), and black birch (root beer! Score!)

I didn't gather anything I can get more of within two blocks of my home, which meant I didn't come home with anything but my CSA pickup later in the day. Well, I could've gathered a whole bunch of black birch twigs, but I declined due to being cold.

Now, the mom of the girl the nieces befriended go to talking with me, and when she found out I live on the North Shore on Staten Island she asked if I'm familiar with Snug Harbor. Well, yeah. Turns out she's a friend of Rachel, who we used to hang out with a lot. Small world, huh?

We got on the train together as we left, and Eva noticed that her stop is only one stop away from her dad's stop. So she asked his name. Get this - she knows him too! Really, in a city of millions! (Well, this is less surprising. His landlord and neighbor homeschools, which is no doubt how they met. All the same...!)
