Because we've done hardly anything over the summer, school-wise. So she has a word problem that runs "Ann and Bob and Charlie want to buy a present that costs $16 and flowers that cost $14 for their mother. They are splitting the cost evenly. How much will they each pay?"
So the first thing Eva says is "I have to divide 2 by 3!", which gets my attention pretty quickly. When I ask why, she says, very slowly and carefully, "because if their mother is paying $14, then they only have to pay $2 together, Connie."
Uh, read it again, honey.
So she does, and it seems like things are going swimmingly until she finishes her math and says "So they're paying a little more than $5 each!"
Wait, what? "Because 16 divided by 3 is -"
Eva, did you add the cost of the flowers? "Isn't their mom getting those?"
Uh, read it again, honey.
So she does (her math skills are just fine, but apparently her reading comprehension can use some work?), and then this same child who easily and successfully divided 16 by 3 in her head starts drawing circles and lines to figure out 30/3. I don't realize this until she screams "ARGH! I LOST COUNT! THIS IS TOO HARD I CAN'T DO IT!" and falls over. But the bump on the seems to have worked, because she immediately popped back up and said "oh, wait, I don't know why I didn't think of it before, they each spend $10!"
