conulyAnd after I shoved her off, I thought "Why IS her tongue so rough?"
When I wondered that as a child, I was told or read that cats tongues are rough so they can clean themselves, and I more or less accepted it without question, but as an adult I had to ask - really? They evolved rough tongues just for grooming? Other animals groom themselves, they don't all have rough tongues.
So I went to the internet, which immediately suggested that while grooming is a possibility, the rough tongues are possibly far more useful in the cat's habit of tearing meat from bones by licking it rather than just gulping food up. This explanation makes a bit more sense.
Now, why is it that when you learn something it immediately comes up again? Not two days later, Eva was watching Mama Cat eat when she said "How can she lick up the dry food? She just grabs it with her tongue!"
And it's true, that's exactly what she does.
