We got the final notice on the gas bill today. They're really not supposed to cut it off in winter, but sooner or later you still have to pay, and I guess later became sooner today.
Do you use gas for heat? In MA, it's illegal to cut off someone's heat for non-payment, Nov-Apr.
All 50 states have a govm't office for regulating the behavior of utility companies. Here in MA, it's called the Dept of Public Utilities, and they have a hotline one can call to ask questions like this, and they will intervene to make utility companies follow the law. Perhaps your state has something similar.
We do have gas heat, and we have a gas stove and we have a gas water heater, and indeed, if we really can't pay it they actually aren't allowed to shut it off in winter, especially as it also heats the downstairs.
But somebody would have to call the gas company to ask for an extension, and one, two, three adults in this family are dragging their heels.
