You know, I've always wondered how on earth Roddenberry could have honestly made himself believe that humans would just ditch religion in the next few hundred years. It occurs to me that maybe he saw rising rates of secularism and thought naively that they would just continue on like that, never thinking that there might be people who really, really don't like it.

Date: 2013-10-15 07:23 pm (UTC)Roddenberry died back in (*checking*) 1991, and the Eugenics Wars supposedly began in 1992. I've held right along, though, that when McCoy, Kirk and Spock went through the 'Guardian of Forever', even though Kirk stopped Bones from saving Edith Keeler and thus prevented the Nazis from winning WWII, they must have caused some other, more subtle 'Butterfly Effects'. They went back to a time-line that appeared to be the one they'd left, but... once they were there, would they have been aware of any discrepancies...?
The Vulcan Science Directorate has determined that time travel is unfair, and how right they were.
