Today is not the first day of school.

It used to be, but a few years ago the teacher's union campaigned successfully to have an extra day after Labor Day to set up their classrooms.
Tomorrow is not the first day of school either, because of the Jewish holidays. Last time they coincided this way hardly anybody showed up for the first day of school, students or teachers. So our first day of school is next Monday. It's a good idea, it makes sense, but it feels so weird to still have the kids all home!
Plenty of the charter schools are open already, though, and seeing them on the boat this afternoon I was struck by how many families bring their elementary aged kids into the city for school. Well, if you can't get into a decent program on the Island (and there's a good chance you can't) you do what you have to.
