She had had three, but now there are only two. Google suggests she probably started with ten. It's not for lack of maternal vigilance! When she saw us coming, she set up gobbling until her two remaining chicks flew up to the nearest fence and perched out of reach of the doggies. But it's not enough, clearly. Poor little chicks :(
Maybe she'll have better luck next year.
* Actually, I looked this one up. Apparently, they don't hang out in flocks when their babies are young. They stay solitary until their chicks, or poults, are a little bigger, and then they reflock. So she probably does hang out with a flock during that time of year when turkeys do that.
