Trying as much as possible to rest my leg these next two days. My pre-existing plan for these two weeks, unfortunately, is to go with a friend's kid and the nieces to the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building and such and then never do it again, so I have to get that done, leg or not. It's getting better, but it'd get better faster if I never put weight on it, which isn't happening.

Lost Eva at the Met, in between Byzantium and Egypt, a distance of maybe 100 feet. It took me longer to locate the security desk than it took for them to find her! The guard remembered her from when she came in (the museum was blissfully uncrowded for a summer day) and predicted, correctly, that once she realized she was lost they'd find her holed up somewhere with a book. She had been poking her head out every few pages in case I appeared, then settling back down so she wouldn't get lost. Very sensible of her! If I hadn't had two other kids with me I would've backtracked all the way to find her, but I didn't want to risk misplacing them as well so I only backtracked a little bit before asking for help.

We spent plenty of time in the section with the furnished rooms, where the girls immediately did what I used to do as a kid and started calling dibs on all the furniture. We spent so much time there that we left almost immediately thereafter, much to Eva's dismay - she had thought we'd see the whole museum! LOL, I pointed out that in no world would that ever happen over the course of a single day, but that we *would* be spending plenty of time there as part of homeschooling, which mollified her somewhat. And this from the girl who declared on the way up that she HATES the Met and doesn't WANT to go there!

Ana spent the entire visit drawing, which got steadily more irritating each time I had to drag her from one room to another. One lost child is enough! We'll have to see if she can take one of the teen classes there, that might make her happy. I have nothing against her drawing, but I do have a lot against her getting lost.

Sometime this summer, probably when as many Americans as possible are tanning on a beach and not paying attention, the White House is expected to release a version of a classified report on torture during the Bush years. Actually, what's likely to become public is only the executive summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee's report; the entire thing, five years in the making, clocks in at about 6,700 pages, making it the most exhaustive account yet of what really went on in secret CIA prisons around the world.

A new study by NASA and University of California, Irvine, scientists finds more than 75 percent of the water loss in the drought-stricken Colorado River Basin since late 2004 came from underground resources. The extent of groundwater loss may pose a greater threat to the water supply of the western United States than previously thought.
