I ended the day with my customary end-of-beach trifecta: sunburned shoulders, headache, and teary right eye. It's ALWAYS the right eye and ALWAYS the shoulders.

I outsmarted myself and thought I could get to a beach on the train and save myself a fare. Turns out I can't, or rather, I can if I'm willing to walk several miles and then not swim. So we caught the bus to the nearest beach, which was Great Kills, in the Gateway Recreation Area. We had to walk quite a distance anyway, and then, once we were there, we STILL had to walk to find a beach with a lifeguard! Once we finally got in the water, I found out why. There's a steep drop-off and the current is pretty strong. Indeed, at the end of the day Eva had to be rescued by the lifeguard. I was busy wiping my eye and didn't see it until I heard the whistle, but she was just fine. The lifeguard was concerned that we left right after and wanted to reassure me that we didn't have to, but we would've left anyway because it was just time to go. Four hours at the beach is really sufficient. It's actually a nice little beach anyway, but too far to get to, and with all the walking and the troublesome water probably not worth it for us.

Still, the area around it is very nice, if mostly fenced off to protect it. We saw some large bird I have no idea what it was, and plenty of mulberry trees (with the requisite mourning doves under them), and deer prints! I didn't believe it at first, but I couldn't think of any other two-toed creature likely to be walking around, and they DO sometimes swim over from New Jersey, and if they're swimmimg they must end up on the beach, right? Plus, google tells me that deer have been spotted in that area. Actually, google says that deer are becoming quite a nuisance on the South Shore. Who knew?

Dropped the nieces with their dad, came home, and saw a double rainbow right over our house. It's a pity the nieces didn't get to see that.
