The drivers on Staten Island can be awful*, but sometimes the pedestrians are worse.

* Though recently I read an editorial from somebody in California who asserted that fewer than 1/2 of the drivers she sees around routinely use their turn signals. That's not a problem around here. They might carelessly run you down, but damnit, their blinker WILL be on (and then off, and then on....) as they do so. At least, it will if they're turning. (You're also not allowed to turn right on red, and people generally respect that.)

So just today I'm out waiting to cross the street, there's heavy traffic, and I see this man decide to just amble across the two lanes going this way and that! Not only that, but he opted to cross diagonally, to the corner that was, um, cattycorner to him. I'm still not sure how he didn't get struck.
