You know, just to be clear, I'm not sure there's EVER a good time to make hateful anti-gay remarks

I mean, if your approach is "live and let live" then you shouldn't care, right? Why would it even come up?

But there's a very BAD time for this sort of statement (no matter how vague you think you're being), and that's gotta be right after a rash of suicides of gay youths and a horrific torture of - gosh, three, four? gay people in your own state. I mean, we just arrested the last of them *today*. You think maybe a little sensitivity would be called for? You think some discretion would be the better part of valor? (Well, that assumes this guy knows what valor even means.)
