It's not even that big, either. I mean, we think it is, but we're in New York. And we didn't even use up most of it! I wonder if it'd be possible to have a small set of basically untended gardens (with more land). I remember reading about some people somewhere who set up their gardens on a five year plan, and don't cultivate beyond planting and picking - eventually, the garden reverts to forest and they start somewhere else, but in the meantime they have five years worth of crops in there (though some of them are gone after one or two years).

Edit: A semi-related post on the perils of the Green Revolution.

Okay.

So, after that post, I realized that the best way to get by while doing the minimum possible amount of hard labor was to found a cult... I mean, a new religion. There's bound to be people after the end of the world going around looking for religion, or hoping to switch religions, and why can't I fill that void? (Note: I want no comments pointing out that preaching is actually quite a difficult job, nor that belief is a prerequisite for religious office. Entirely irrelevant to the rest of this post.)

So I'm thinking about this, and wondering - is it okay to just crib cool holidays off of other people just because I like them? And I'm thinking and pondering when I realize, duh, people always have done that! Just look at Christmas!

So now I'm wondering - what are the coolest holidays you know of? They can be entirely fictional, even - if I've got a cult of my very own, are my followers really going to check details? Besides, in the end of the world, maybe Google won't exist anymore.
