Oh boy....
Jan. 13th, 2007 04:45 pmYesterday, here I am, wrapping up presents for Elliot's birthday, and I'm using a dratted rotary cutter because I can't find the scissors, so, of course, my finger gets sliced open. Barely, but I didn't want blood on the wrapping paper, right?
So I left the room to secure the rotary cutter, and entered the bathroom to get a band-aid, and I was having real trouble opening the band-aid I got... in meanwhile, Ana grabbed her coconut oil, dropped it, broke it, and ran off into her room with the unbroken half of the jar. (Unbroken, that is, except for the jagged edge....)
I found her under her bed scooping coconut oil out to play with. So she and her sister went *on* the bed while I crawled around for a while cleaning up coconut oil and glass. Luckily, that stuff is solid at quite a high temperature, so I just dumped it into a new container - but the glass!
And first Ana tried telling me that it wasn't her fault, it was an accident (an accident which, as I pointed out to her, would never have happened if she'd been behaving)... and then she said "But that's how I am! You should have put it away so I couldn't get it!"
...
Granted, she has a point. She is, after all, only three. But I have long maintained that if you're old enough to make excuses, you're old enough to start finding ways around your problems. Ana is apparently now old enough. And it's not like she didn't know better, at least - low impulse control, sure, but she knew better.
(She later modified this to "you should put it away so the baby can't get it", which is a bit more reasonable.)
