The comments to this post by [livejournal.com profile] priyatelka got me to thinking about annoying songs people sing as kids. I eventually came to the conclusion that the most annoying song isn't one of the traditionally annoying ones, like "The Song that Never Ends" or "Infinite Bottles of Beer on the Wall", but one that's annoying to the singer as well. Which led me to this )

I'm not complaining, it's not too annoying. But it's raised a question.

If I say "there are # green bottles hanging on the wall", the word "are" comes before the phrase "green bottles". But if I say "# green bottles are hanging on the wall" the word "are" has to come after the phrase "green bottles".

If I say "there # green bottles are hanging on the wall", that is a different meaning from either of the above sentences. And "are # green bottles hanging on the wall" isn't even an option.

Why?

So, hold on. They're going to give up on banning gay marriage EVERYWHERE, but they're now going to make it impossible to appeal against the DOMA (which means that a marriage in one state need not be recognized in another state if it happens to be between two men or two women)?

Evil. Pure evil. And either terribly short-sighted or maniacally clever. The precedent set is unthinkable. We have a constitutional right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. But if one or two laws like this get passed, how long before that right is diluted to nothingness? Precedent is a powerful thing.
