No, I didn't know - I don't think I was ever back behind the lunchroom counters of either my own schools or my daughter's, to see what was there. I was at boarding school for high school; a lot of our food came by steam table, but we also had a real kitchen and a real cook to rule it. All the daycare centers I taught in had kitchens and cooks too, and the food was generally quite good, though plain and simple. I realize, public school is a whole different magnitude of problem.

If the schools don't even have kitchens, it's probably folly to hope for much improvement. The public-school system is so seriously broken in so many ways that nothing but drastically altering the whole public-education paradigm is going to do any good. Meanwhile, best to send children to school with their own lunch - too bad one can't send them with their own books and companions as well.
