1. If it says "I'm crossposting this everywhere, please help me!" or in any way encourages you to spread it around, please don't. Other people will do it for you.

2. Check snopes.com before crossposting ANYTHING. If that doesn't help, search google. Be VERY cautious about posting anything with language such as "evil" or "bankrupt" or "every/all *insert the noun*".

3. Check the places where you want to crosspost something. Is it a livejournal community? Make sure that it's 1. appropriate (no politics in a pet community unless it deals with animals) and 2. not been posted there recently.

4. Check the date on whatever it is. If there is no date, try to guess the age. If it's not recent, be wary about crossposting it, it's probably been posted several times before.

5. If, after all this, you still want to crosspost whatever it is, make it readable. If it's just a link, say something about the link. If it's a chain letter, edit it to have only text.

Thanks.

Addendum: don't post/forward anything written in ALL CAPS, and don't post or forward anything that says "Send this to all your friends/everyone you know/everyone in your address book." That makes it a chain letter, and people can complain to your ISP if you forward a chain letter to them.
