Okay, so...

This is a few days old now.

Of course, I haven't heard that much about it.

And what I do read is a bit scary.

So the real question here is what on earth is happening to this country? followed closely by which English-speaking nations have the best immigration policies?

The first may be hypothetical, the second definitely isn't.

"“It is not unfair to make an American citizen account for the fact that they decided to help Al Qaeda to kill us all and hold them as long as it takes to find intelligence about what may be coming next,” Graham said. “And when they say, ‘I want my lawyer,’ you tell them, ‘Shut up. You don’t get a lawyer.’”"

No, it's really not hypothetical.

That is really scary. I've always thought I'd prefer to go back to Canada when I'm done with graduate studies, but always figured staying in the US was still a possibility. This makes me question whether I really do want to keep it as a possibility.

Plus side: Longer days in winter, probably less snow.
Actually, generally more snow in the part of the US where I am now (Columbus, OH) than in the part of Canada I come from (Vancouver, BC, which has winters that are usually more rainy than snowy, though there's some now).

Other reason to end up here: assuming I end up following an academic career, there are simply more universities and therefore more academic jobs in the US than in Canada. I may have the option of getting a job in the US and no option of getting a job in Canada.

And remember, you're not a citizen, so they really don't care about tromping all over your rights.
I know...

You speak English and aren't generally brown, right?
Right. So I'm probably relatively safe (as wrong as it is that these things make one safer). And I don't think I'm likely to trigger notice. But still.

I'll happily look into Canadian immigration policies for you if you want, but I'm wondering: if you left the U.S., who would look after the girls?

The best way to get into Canada is as a skilled worker or to have a family member who is already in Canada and is willing to sponsor you. There's a "Coming to Canada Wizard" on this page here to help: http://www.cic.gc.ca/app/ctcvac/english/qc100
