We've been stopping in a lot recently because a. the ice creams and sorbets (made by Jane's Homemade Ice Cream in Kingston) are awesome and b. it's good to support new local business. And old local businesses.

Now, I'd been getting every time a scoop of ginger ice cream because I happen to like ginger and it's really a good flavor. I didn't even look at the vanilla chocolate strawberry bins because why pay extra to get what I can get anywhere?

But they rotate their flavors, and I wasn't able to get ginger this week. I tried peanut butter. It was good, peanut butter ice cream is always good, but not great. I tried their dulce de leche, another "always-good" flavor. Meh.

Yesterday we stopped in, and as I passed Ana her cone of raspberry sorbet I took a small bite of it. Mmm. That was good! But a little tart for my tastes. Now, raspberry sorbet always always always goes well with vanilla ice cream, right? So I got two scoops, one of each.

OMFG.

That is actually the best vanilla ice cream I have ever eaten in my life.

Vanilla is simultaneously an overpushed and an underappreciated flavor. I don't get why everybody uses the term "vanilla" to mean "plain and boring". Vanilla is a very strong flavor. But most people, when they make vanilla ice cream, they overdo it.

This was great. We went again TODAY to celebrate a birthday, and the various grown-ups asked my advice (as most of them hadn't been in there before) and I told them all the same thing: "It's a strange thing to recommend, but you have GOT to try their vanilla."

This isn't much use to most of you, as you live nowhere near here, but should you ever be in the area you should absolutely do as I just said. (Well, unless they have ginger. Then you should get one scoop of each. Pity they don't seem to make a cinnamon flavor year-round, as that's always awesome.)

Cinnamon ice cream is wonderful. And I have been somewhat ginger-deprived, as Chinatown Ice Cream Factory has been out of it on my last couple of visits. Maybe I should try after work today, instead of just kvetching here in the context of an ice cream shop that doesn't even have it right now.

A long, long time ago, a store where I lived sold an ice cream in a flavour called something like, "REALLY vanilla, vanilla." It was the best vanilla ice cream I ever tasted. Alas, it wasn't around for long. I don't know what happened to it -- whether the store stopped selling that brand, or what, but I still remember it many, many years later.

In a town just outside the city I live in, they have an independent ice creamery which has two shops. They have two types of vanilla. Once I was in the shop on the south end of town, procrastinating my choice. I let someone go ahead of me whilst I chose. She told the person serving that she'd come all the way across town because the other shop had been out of that particular vanilla. I gather it's rather good *grin*
