I was going to call bullshit on this until I saw the 300,000 cops thing. (For comparison, we have about 70,000 cops to patrol all of Canada.)

...and now I'm going to call bullshit on how the hell you can afford to pay that many cops. o_O

Well, Japan is approximately 4x as populous as Canada.

127 million to your 33.7 million.

And in a LOT less space, so it's probably even more important for people to follow the rules.

That, and not stretching the nation's resources all over the place with the result of basically dedicating at least a third of our budget to being really big. x_x

Meanwhile, the preschooler article resonates a lot with me. I'm thinking back to law school and my practice now, and starting to notice this pretty consistent correlation between what I can do versus what causes me to shrink into a corner and say whatever it takes for the client to get the hell out of my office, and whether the prof and the lawyers I've spoken to have been enthusiastic about finding or listening to new solutions for things versus trying to keep the situation framed so that one can defer to some pre-established authority.
