That "conscience rule" that allowed doctors to not prescribe contraceptives because they didn't feel like it agree with contraceptives? It has been rescinded. (Honestly, there are SO MANY branches of medicine that will NEVER cause you to get into a crisis of conscience. Podiatry, for example. Why on earth do these people pick the one that WILL?)

It is possible for the needs of a patient to come into conflict with a doctor's conscience in non-reproductive medicine. Think of patients who don't want another painful round of aggressive treatment for terminal illness, and doctors who can't believe an ethical doctor would let a patient die.

There are even conflicts around conditions that are not life-threatening. I've consulted doctors who wanted to try surgery, and said they could not in good conscience allow me to continue taking medication for a chronic condition. I'm sure there are other doctors who believe in drug treatment, and consider surgery unconscionably dangerous. Lucky for me, I wasn't stuck with the surgery advocate--part of my chronic pain was CAUSED by surgery, and it terrifies me. When I saw him, he had to refer me to another doctor (though with dire warnings that I was making a terrible mistake.)

The most horrifying thing about the "conscience rule" for reproductive medicine is that medical practitioners can refuse care and not refer patients to other providers.

How can one agree or disagree with contraceptives? Aren't they inanimate objects? They don't have opinions, do they?

Clearly, you have never gotten into a battle of wits with a condom.

Why on earth do these people pick the one that WILL?

I think they do it on purpose so they can try and refuse women contraception, because they like poking their noses into other peoples' business just that much.

*nods* That's what I thought, too. They want to be in a position where they can prevent others from doing something they consider OMGWRONG...
