Second- as others have noted, there does seem to be a strain in most religions to spend a great deal of money on meaningless stuff. The vatican is a virtual mecca of conspicuous spending. There lots of garish mega churches in poor neighborhoods.
I'm not sure if the poster intended to mix that metaphor or not, but I LOL'd.
