This is a good example of fantasy. The things that Wesley does with the plant are not actually possible but the author has done a good job of making it believable. the setting is that a of a boring normal neighborhood, except that the boys all shave half of their heads and there are only three crops that anyone grows in thier garden. This allow Wesley to stand out and form a very distinct culture.
They're talking about Weslandia. Although the thing Wesley does with one plant (two different food sources, shade, ink, fabric, mosquito repellent and sunblock) he's just discovered are improbable, it's not actually impossible. The fact that he turns from being an outcast to a major trendsetter is much more fantastical, but still, it is not beyond the realm of possibility for this to happen.
Of course, let's continue with the reviews...
Very Weird. The cool kids in this book wear mohawks and dread lockes. I don't recommend this book becuase I wouldn't want my children acting like some of the characters in this book.
Apparently it passed this reader right by that the cool kids are, in fact, annoying little twerps. The mere fact that they exist - even if only to mock that sort of behavior - is enough for her not to want her children to read this book. (The fact that the cool kids bully Wesley mercilessly, of course, goes entirely unnoticed... but if it did, I'm sure she'd think her children are impressionable enough to not realize that that behavior is criticized.)
The illustrations in this picture book are amazing. They were created using acrylic paints. The colors are vibrant and very detailed. The illustrations add to the story and help the reader see what is happening.
Yes, that's what illustrations generally do.
