I'm not sure how difficult it would be on yours, but I put in a new keyboard on my Compaq last year and it was ridiculously easy and took me about ten minutes or so.
Mine just involved loosening a couple of screws and sliding in that strip of tape. That was it. And the instructions on how to do it were in the user's manual that was on the website. I thought it was going to be hard, too. I was all impressed with myself when I was done. :D
I replaced a keyboard on my Mac once, and it was very difficult. Had to take it to 2 shops before we found a screwdriver that could take out the screws holding the original keyboard in place. Once those were out, however, dropping in the new one was a snap.
What do you have to lose? If the current keyboard isn't usable, you're going to need to plug in an external keyboard anyway, right? So if you end up breaking the built-in keyboard, you'll be no worse off than before. (I hope.)
