I rather like the Keepon robot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWcNYFQ5TLE) that intralimina posted about over at her other blog a while ago. Too bad it's $30K!
In downtown Manhattan, many people are used to seeing unusual things on the streets either as advertising, or as art experiments.
The man who spoke to the robot is interesting. He may have assumed it had a microphone on board, or simply responded to the anthropomorphic model and related to it as if it were a child or animal.
Others may have assumed the robot had a camera on board, or that they were on camera (which some of them were), thus influencing their decision to help the model on its way.
Perhaps not. I would wish to assist it simply for the reasons you gave. ;)
I talk to inanimate objects all the time. Well, not literally all the time, but on a regular basis. I don't think I'm on camera, and I don't think they can hear me. It's just a habit. I also talk to myself a lot, although that is helpful and works as a bit of a memory trick and keeps me on task.
I would have been inclined to explain out loud why I wasn't following the instructions. And had I been able to follow them, I'd probably have said something like, "There you go."
