But then one day *everybody* is talking about it?

All of a sudden, various fora and comms I'm in are talking on and on about handedness. After months of no discussion on the subject, suddenly three or four or five people realized their kids are left-handed, all at the same time. (And these aren't all school-aged children either.)

Weird.

Anyway, at one place people are talking about the various things they do with their non-dominant hand. Like, one person writes left-handed, but does nearly everything else with her right hand. Another person is predominately lefty, but uses scissors and can openers righty. A third is right-handed except when it comes to most sports, apparently.

As for me? I'm almost exclusively left-handed. I've posted before about that weird feeling that my right side isn't even part of my body that I get sometimes, right? Except there are *two things* I do exclusively with my right hand.

I pick my nose, and I masturbate.

Seriously, if I try to do those with my left hand it's like my body isn't built right, nothing fits together and it's highly uncoordinated.

I've refrained from commenting about that elsewhere, as you can imagine :P

I'll be off now, but for one last word of advice:

There is no such thing as lefty-righty scissors! Left-handed scissors are jointed differently from right-handed scissors. So called "ambidextrous" scissors are just righty scissors with weird handles.

That is all.

I pick my nose with both hands, but exclusively with my thumbs.

oh yeah thumbs. that's why I keep my thumb nails long. otherwise I can't pick my nose correctly.

although I suppose if I grew any of my other nails as long they'd probably be equally efficient.

...There are things that I could say about the masturbation part, but I'm not sure that I'd be comfortable saying them... so I won't.

Ha! I do everything with my left hand except for one of the things you mentioned (*coughs* probably because I need my dominant hand for turning the page or using the mouse) - and also using scissors. My first school never had lefty scissors, so I learned so thoroughly to cut with my right hand that now I couldn't do it the other way around if I tried.

I am very right-handed for most things. However, there seem to be about three things that I can't do with my right hand, or are at least awkward to do:

1. Snap my fingers. Easy as all heck on my left hand, can barely do it on my right hand.

2. The Vulcan finger salute. Again, very easy on my left hand, but takes a great deal of effort on my right.

3. Holding a telephone receiver. I can do it in my right hand, but it feels all weird. It's just easier to hold it in my left hand for some reason. *Shrug*

I'm mostly right-handed, but I can do everything but write with my left (not that my writing is very good with my right, either). And in keeping with the non-dominant-hand theme, I usually masturbate with my left hand.

Fascinating!!

I am primarily right-handed, except... Golf, surfing, and baseball. Oh, and I swap my hands when I play Donkey Kong on a real arcade machine. Go figure that one! It's a sight, I'm sure, at the arcade, to see me standing there with my arms crossed over one another. :-)

I guess with nose-picking I'm ambidextrous, but for masturbation I'm definitely a rightie. :-)

What an entertaining conversation!

I'm a righty, but I'm pretty well ambidextrous for things that don't require a lot of fine motor control, and I'm lefty for a select few things. There have been times when, in a situation where I'm doing something that isn't super-fine-motor (like eating with utensils) I'll somehow forget momentarily that I'm right-handed and then wonder why although I'm not making a mess it feels really awkward somehow.

And I think handedness is probably the closest analogy to gender identity and sexual orientation.

I swap all over the place according to the job(my left is strong, my right slightly more coordinated). I've noticed slightly more right-handedness in recent years, though.

I wonder if the handedness talk has come about because our next President is left handed.

Nah, the ambidextrous scissors I've seen were the chintzy kind that were so cheaply made that there WAS no left or right to them.

They didn't cut well, either.
