UK Muslims Urged to Fight Terror.

Fight terror? They're stopping fear dead, are they? Or, instead, are they being asked to fight terror...ism?

Police sources told CNN the suspects were "linked to possible Islamist terror."

They were linked to fear in the Muslim community? Or were they linked to attacks by Muslims designed to cause fear in OTHER communities? People, terrorism is what causes terror. You can't really commit terror. It's not something you do. You may terrify, but you can't just "commit terror". You commit terrorism, or terrorist acts.

Britain, closest ally of the United States in the war on terror and the war in Iraq, has long warned it could be a target for Islamic terrorists.

Now we've got a WAR on terror. We're going into kid's closets and rooting out the monsters, are we? Or could we possibly mean that we are preventing bombings and attacks? The distinction really isn't that difficult. One is a word, the other is a word ending in the dreaded -ism, meaning, in this case, an action, process, or practice.

*smitesmitesmite*

There is absolutely no need to dilute the meaning of one word when we have a perfectly acceptable, easily understood, common word already!

Terror. Pah.

Edit NOOOOOOOOOOO! Thai Bomb Theft Causes Terror Fear.

Terror fear? TERROR FEAR? Of all the ridiculous, asinine, redundant phrases. It's NOT terror fear, as terror means the same as fear, except maybe stronger. It's fear of terrorism (nice genitive there...) or terrorism concerns or just fear because we know the probable cause of our fear.

People, please. Try a little clarity. It's a good thing.

Having nothing to do with any of that (thank god) here's the toy link I mentioned a few entries back:

I don't think there's anything battery operated in the catalog, which is wonderful.

Mrgh... I, too, find the frequent misuse of the word 'terror' in the news media to be annoying.

At least when you READ it it doesn't tend to sound like "turr'r."

Have you not heard it said like that before? I's been bugging me since about a week after September 11th, when some idiot coined the phrase. ctually, it may have been Bush.

And here it's pronounced ter-ror, Xig. Or ter-rah if you've gone far enough into Essex.

Here it's likely to be "them effin terrarists", or "those bloody ter-ro-rists", depending where you are and what school they went to(this isn't elitist- people do talk differently at the different schools, especially between, say, slightly posh Westcliff and Thorpe Bay, which has a police guard outside. If you talked with a posher accent at Thorpe Bay, you would be eaten alive)

Well, I can understand "war on terror" as similar to a "war on poverty." Doesn't make it correct, of course, and I doubt that was the intention. The other examples, though - especially "terror fear" - those are weird. And funny. Is it really that hard to add an extra syllable? (Or is it two syllables? ism... One and a half?)
